Case Study - Glasgow’s artists to benefit from building refurbishment

A Glasgow-based business has won a contract to revamp a rundown and under-utilised building into a thriving hub for artists.

CBC Group – a leading Scottish construction and refurbishment business – landed the £2.14 million project from Wasps Artists’ Studios, an award-winning charity which provides affordable studio space for artists across Scotland. The King Street building, situated in the Merchant City, will be transformed into a purpose-built centre with 63 artists’ studios and 29 offices for creative industries companies over four floors.

CBC won the contract as a result of a competitive tender process through the Scottish Government’s procurement portal Public Contracts Scotland (PCS).

Work recently started to the 53,000sq feet tenement building will add to Wasps other buildings in the area – The Briggait and Trongate 103 – and realise a long-held ambition to establish a hub for creative industries.

Ray Morley, CBC’s Business Development Manager said: “We are delighted to have secured this contract and help Wasps deliver studio space which will support local artists. Our response to Wasps’ brief through PCS allowed us to demonstrate our expertise and experience in delivering this kind of project.

“Working on buildings within city centres can present challenges in terms of access and logistics, but we have the right team for project – and this was something we were able to demonstrate in our bid.”

David Cook, Secretary of The Wasps Trust, said: “For over 30 years Wasps has been providing studio space for Scottish artists, we currently have 19 building in locations from the Borders to the Shetland Islands. The King Street studio is a great addition to this portfolio, and is a significant boost to Glasgow’s reputation as a cultural and creative city which encourages and supports artists.

“We’re pleased to be working with CBC and confident that they have the skills and track record to deliver this exciting project. The advantage of posting contracts through the PCS portal is that we can ensure we are working with a supplier which delivers value for money and quality.”
