Case Study - Dovetail Enterprises, Dundee

Despite its 160-years reputation for manufacturing quality products, Dundee-based business, Dovetail Enterprises continues to surprise its customers.

It’s not just the impressive 100,000sq feet of manufacturing space, latest design and manufacturing technology or varied product range that is unexpected, perhaps most surprising is that Dovetail Enterprises is a supported business.

Currently the business delivers a range of furniture, beds, mattresses, and fire doors to commercial,  private, public and third sector companies  within the education and care sectors, the hotel and hospitality industry, oil and gas sector, as well as offices, cafes and restaurants.

Very few of these customers choose to do business with Dovetail because of its supported business status – they buy from the business because of its capacity and capabilities. The business firmly believes that its hard-earned reputation with its customers for quality and flexibility is one that it would like to demonstrate more widely to the public sector.

With only a small percentage of its current annual turnover of £2.8 million attributed to public sector contracts, Dovetail is hopeful that the Scottish Government’s supported factories and businesses framework agreement will have a positive impact on the business.

Ann Jamieson, Sales and Marketing Manager for Dovetail Enterprises, said: “We have had great support over the years from some local authorities, and we are keen to engage more widely with other public sector buyers – not just local authorities - so that they can find out about Dovetail and what it is capable of."

“Most especially, we feel that our knowledge and experience is of real benefit to public sector architects, specifiers, budget holders and contractors at the design stage of projects – often we can recommend product choices or finishes based on the intended setting and end user. We can bring this expertise to decisions being made for residential homes, social housing and care and educational facilities along with construction projects taking into account any particular requirements of users.

“Dovetail can provide room layout suggestions, interior design and space planning as well as the finished products – many of our contracts involve fitted-furniture solutions which are fully bespoke. In addition we have a standard range of products which can be ordered off the shelf."

“We work with a range of clients across the public, private and third sector – all our products comply with industry standards and safety requirements and are manufactured to the highest contract specification. Our fire door range is a hugely successful element of the business, due in part to the high-quality materials used, and is an area of the business there is growth and development of ranges due to our inventive approach, coupled with a long-serving highly-skilled work force”.

“There are 55 employees at Dovetail, 36 of whom have a disability, their skills and attention to detail is a large part of the business’ success. Dovetail has a lot to offer all customers within the public sector and we welcome the opportunity to demonstrate our competitiveness, quality and experience.”
