Case Study - New micro-business PCS success

Despite being in operation for only 12 months, a Kirkcaldy-based consultancy has notched up an impressive contract award success rate since registering with PCS. Frew Conservation, a historic buildings consultancy and training provider specialising in the conservation and repair of traditional buildings, has landed five contract awards with public sector organisations since the business was launched by director Craig Frew.

Having previously worked within organisations which used PCS, Craig was quick to realise its potential and registered his consultancy with the service. Despite being a specialised, small and new business, Craig’s efforts to tender for relevant opportunities have been well rewarded, most recently with a contract with Argyll and Bute Council to deliver a series of training workshops through the Campbeltown Townscape Heritage Initiative.

The workshops form part of a comprehensive training programme targeted towards all stakeholders of the historic built environment including local contractors, building professionals, council officers and homeowners, seeking to build on local skills and knowledge and increase confidence in working with traditional buildings.

Craig is working with local authorities across Scotland, from Argyll and Bute to Highland Council, bringing over 12 years of experience to deliver his expertise advising on the conservation and repair of traditional buildings, particularly those built of stone and lime mortar.

Craig said: “Much of the work I do with public sector organisations is centred around the business’ training services, in some cases these are related to a Townscape Heritage Initiative scheme which aims to deliver a better understanding to building contractors, professionals and homeowners on the particular conservation needs of their historic buildings.

“I also work private sector contractors, architects and other building professionals, as well as individual property owners, delivering technical consultancy services related to the conservation and repair of traditional and historic buildings.

“Despite being a small-scale consultancy, I have found registering and using PCS very straightforward and I’ve been pleased with the amount of relevant opportunities there are. I would say to other micro businesses not to be daunted by the service and to register as you never know what opportunities may be on offer.

“I find the email alert service particularly useful – it takes just minutes a day to scan through to see if there are any contracts of interest. And, Quick Quote is also a great tool and an easy way to tender for contracts.

“Working with the public sector is vital for the sustainability of the business and I am sure that PCS is going to play a crucial role in securing contracts.”
