Case Study - Icon Fabrications Ltd

“A breath of fresh air.” That’s how Mike Green, Commercial Director of Icon Fabrications, described his first encounter with Public Contracts Scotland (PCS).

Midlothian-based Icon Fabrications has been trading since December 2011, with 10 employees, fabricating steel and metalwork, and is looking to grow in a number of areas, including public sector work.

Mike said: “While working with other companies in the past I have found penetrating the public sector nigh on impossible. I always found it cumbersome, time consuming and very difficult to establish contact with the relevant personnel.

“But when I came across the PCS website it was like a breath of fresh air. It was very easy to use and got you in touch with every Scottish local authority.

“I did have some initial doubts about tendering, as we are a new company, but this wasn’t an obstacle at all and we won the first tender we bid for using the PCS website.”

That was a contract with Fife Council to build and install stainless steel handrails and balustrades at Ceres Primary School, along with some gates in the school grounds.

“It’s not a massive contract – about £7000 – but it has got us onto the system and into tendering for other public sector business.

“We are also receiving frequent updates from PCS, letting us know what contracts are available in our sector, which is fantastic.”
