Scottish business works hand-in-glove with police
A Scottish workwear manufacturer’s gloves have been rated the best on the beat and will be keeping police officers across Scotland warmer this winter.
Aberdeen-based Wenaas UK Ltd successfully tendered to supply cold-weather gloves for all Scotland’s police forces earlier this year following a rigorous selection process. The Aberdeen operation has an annual turnover in excess of £10 million and is a division of the Kwintet Group, Europe’s largest workwear manufacturer.
The three-year contract for the gloves was advertised on Public Contract Scotland (PCS) – the Government’s flagship procurement portal. Public sector organisations such as local authorities and health boards spend £9 billion on contracts every year. Any size of business can register with the free one-stop single-access portal and view local and national public sector contract opportunities. Since its launch in 2008, the portal has made finding and tendering for public sector contracts much easier and more efficient for business.
The procurement process for the contract, which has a potential value of £150,000 based on supply of gloves for up to 15,000 officers, was led by Grampian Police. It received bids from 13 businesses offering 17 different gloves and distributed the gloves to forces across Scotland for trial during last winter’s severe and extreme weather conditions. The user trials delivered a clear result in favour of the Wenaas product.
Colin Heppenstall, head of procurement for Grampian Police, said: “We are pleased with the response we had following our advert in the PCS portal. Wenaas UK Ltd clearly met the expected criteria and following the trial in the awful weather we had last December, all the forces unanimously agreed its gloves were the most fit for purpose. I look forward to working with Wenaas throughout the period of the contract.”
Wenaas UK account manager, Ashley Ann Murray, said: “Having gone through the rigorous, but open tendering process, we are obviously delighted to have been awarded the contract. This is the first time we have used the PCS portal and we found it to be extremely helpful and easy to use.
“I would recommend that any supplier wanting to do business the Scottish public sector registers with PCS immediately.”
